When I met Don (my husband) nearly ten years ago, he said, "You move around the planet like a hummingbird. Fluttering purposefully through life touching lives and sprinkling joy." I really have no words to express how that statement influenced and affected my view of the world.
Legends say that hummingbirds float free of time, carrying our hopes for love, joy and celebration. The hummingbird's delicate grace reminds us that "life is rich, beauty is everywhere, every personal connection has meaning and laughter is life's sweetest creation."
When I started dating Don, I was a newly single mom, exhausted, uncertain about just about everything and was pretty much a hot mess. I was extremely sensitive, anxious and distrusting. What I found to be strange at first is that during our time together, whether a dinner date, a walk in the park or a weekend getaway, I always felt lots of joy. We laughed so much of the time we spent together - and I’m not talking about a few chuckles, I mean a flat out belly laugh until your stomach hurts kind of laugh. What's funny is that I can't remember specifically what any one moment was about, I just knew that I started to feel better and my outlook on life seemed to get brighter.
"People will always remember the way you make them feel." -Maya Angelou
Did you know when you laugh that the brain produces endorphins, which are one of the "feel good" hormones? Endorphins are best known for minimizing pain. I call them the "heart healer" medicine.
As a coach and counselor, I help people find joy in the midst of pain, clarity in the midst of confusion, and most of all, I help people discover the side of their lives that are rich and beautiful filled with meaningful connections, joy and laughter.
When you're traveling through uncharted territory, look for the simple things that bring you joy and laughter like a friend, movie, trip, etc. If you pay attention, you will notice the shift in your feelings and you will actually feel lighter. Find a reason to laugh everyday, it'll do your heart good!
